WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR BUTTERFLIES?
I purchase of my specimens from a licensed dried and dead insect supplier who has been in the business for over 25 years. All of the Lepidoptera (Butterflies and Moths) and all other Insect wings are attained from cruelty-free farms across the globe through a licensed wholesaler. These farms raise and care for the caterpillars to pupae to butterflies and the butterflies once hatched are allowed to fly in freedom until their natural death. They are raised intentionally in underpriveledged countries and are collected when their lives expire naturally. No butterflies are killed for making my jewelry pieces. These farms play a HUGE role in providing employment, education and conservation of their reared specimens as they release a certain percentage back into the wild to increase the natural population.
WHAT DO YOU MEAN BY BUTTERFLY FARMING?
Butterfly farming is the breeding of pupae for sale to local butterfly exhbits or for export to zoos, collectors and live exhibitions overseas. Butterfly farms are situated in close proximity to areas of natural forest and provide an alternative for stainable income to rural communities. Butterfly farms have been established in many tropical countries worldwide - including the Philippines, Costa Rica, Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania
I NOTICE A SMALL FLAW ON A FEW OF YOUR BUTTERFLY PIECES, WHY?
90% of the Wings I use are from imperfect or damaged specimens I have purchased that collectors can’t utilize due to a broken wing or antennae or leg. This way, I can still use the broken wing for mosaic pieces and the other wings for my single pendants or rings etc. Some butterflies in nature, may be caught by a bird or have had weather damage but I feel this adds a great story and character to the pieces. Just imagine that little butterfly nearly escaping the clutches of a big bird swooping in the air to catch her...and missing! Love that thought. Butterflies are pretty amazing!
WHY DOES MY BUTTERFLY PIECE HAVE SOLDER IN DIFFERENT PLACES THAT PICTURED
Please note that though I try to make the pieces as identical to the original in a listing, that there are minute changes that need to be allowed for such as temperature in the room when I am making the piece, size of the wing, as it may be slightly smaller or larger than the one pictured. I need to be allowed my artistic freedom to be able to accomplish the piece to the best beauty and uniqueness to that specific wing as possible. I do work very closely to the original photos as possible.
